I was very interested in the recent article in the New York Times telling of a new study showing how turbulence from toilet bowls creates a large, potentially infectious, plume that could be hazardous to the bathroom's next visitor.
I would have been more interested if Wikipedia didn't already have a section on toilet plumes and their effect on disease transmission.
Or if I hadn't read broadcaster Adam Hart-Davis's 1997 book: Thunder, Flush and Thomas Crapper. Where he talks about research showing that bacteria from a contaminated toilet were easily detectable 40cm away after flushing. Here is a photo of the article.
I know the media is happy to repeat stories over and over again but is science doomed to repeat the same experiments over and again as well?
NB: apparently, it's no good standing on the toilet seat.
